Lumia 650 (1)

On April 1st, Microsoft Malaysia began taking pre-orders of the new Lumia 650 on its own Lazada store section. The first 150 customers who purchase this device get AirAsia BIG points. After the pre-order window closes on April 7th, Lumia 650 will go on sale from April 8th onwards, at all Microsoft Authorized Resellers and Microsoft Mobile Resellers nationwide. The device retails at RM899, and from the release date on the 8th until the 15th, customers who purchase this Lumia 650 will also receive AirAsia BIG points. Malaysia will get both Black and White color options of the Lumia 650, and the phone purchase doesn’t seem to come with a microSD card.

Elaborating on the gifts, the first 150 folks who pre-order between April 1st and 7th will get RM25 off using code ‘LUMIA25’ during checkout, plus 13,899 AirAsia BIG points (899 of them eligible only for existing AirAsia BIG members), which can be used to redeem a free return ticket to their destination of choice — be it Phuket or Krabi. For those who missed the pre-order window and purchased the Lumia 650 between April 8th and 15th, they will also get 13,000 AirAsia BIG points. The points too can be redeemed for a free return ticket to their destination of choice (within the points range). It is a no-brainer that if you’re planning to get this device, sign up to be an AirAsia BIG member before purchasing the Lumia 650.

As a refresher, Lumia 650 is the successor to the Lumia 640 family of 2015, but it only offers slight improvements over last year’s models, while being more expensive this time around. It runs on Snapdragon 212 (1.3GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU) compared to Lumia 640’s Snapdragon 400 (1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU), has a similar 5-inch 720p display, but a smaller 2000mAh battery (Lumia 640 has a 2500mAh battery). While the main camera remains at 8 megapixels, Lumia 650’s front shooter has been upgraded to 5 megapixels, compared to 640’s 1-megapixel type.

Perhaps two of the most significant omissions are this — Lumia 650 in Malaysia seems to only support one nano-SIM card, and it lacks SensorCore. SensorCore is a co-processor that’s able to perform tasks like steps counting without taxing the battery life, and it is found in all Lumia 640 variants from last year. As a final note, while Lumia 650 ships with Windows 10 Mobile pre-installed, it lacks many of the defining features such as the Windows Hello iris-scanning authentication, and Microsoft Continuum that lets you hook up external displays, keyboard and mouse, to be used as a desktop computer. Lumia 640 as well as the 640 XL, will receive Windows 10 Mobile, if not already. The 640 is also cheaper at Lazada (RM709), and comes with a free 10000mAh battery pack (power bank), though its 8GB storage is smaller than Lumia 650’s 16GB.
