Xiaomi Mi Pad Malaysian release

Just in time for Chinese New Year, Xiaomi Malaysia has made available its high-end Mi Pad tablet that will go on sale at 12pm tomorrow, February 10th. Late last week, the company organized a contest and shortly after, the Mi Pad’s retail price for Malaysia was revealed to be at just RM799.

Mi Pad was first announced back in mid-May, and at the time, it was one of the higher-end Android tablets around. Powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra K1 processor, it was touted to perform 2.3 times better than Apple’s A7 chip, based on the GFXBench benchmark test. Now that I’ve angered some iOS fans, let’s talk about the design. At risk of irking the Android faithful, the easiest way to describe the Mi Pad’s design is that it has the exact display dimensions and aspect ratio as the iPad mini, while having color options similar to that of the iPhone 5c.

The rest of the specifications are as follow:

  • 2.2GHz 4+1 core NVIDIA TEGRA K1 CPU and Kepler 192 GPU.
  • Runs MIUI (probably V5 or later and is based on Android 4.4.2 KitKat).
  • 7.9”, 2048 x 1536 QXGA IPS screen, Gorilla Glass 3 panel with a pixel density 326 ppi.
  • 2GB RAM for the 16GB internal memory one and 3GB for the 64GB one. Both tablets accept microSD card of up to 128 GB. (only the 16GB option is available in Malaysia)
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with 2×2 dual-band MIMO antenna, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi Display, and Bluetooth 4.0.
  • 8MP rear camera, BSI sensor from Sony but there’s no flash. 5MP front camera from OmniVision. Aperture is rated at f/2.0 for both cameras.
  • 6700mAh, non-removable Li-Pol battery.
  • Dimensions 202.1 x 135.4 x 8.5 mm and weighs 360 g.
  • Comes in Quiet Blue, Lemon Yellow, Passion Pink and 3 other colors (only the white option is available in Malaysia)

Much like all Xiaomi products officially sold in Malaysia, we’re only getting the most boring variant; in this case the 16GB storage option, that comes only in white color.

It’s hard to beat the price though. At RM799, it isn’t too far off from the Chinese pricing, which is C¥3999 (around RM854 at the time of writing). It’s hard to compare the pricing due to the lack of Tegra K1 tablets out there, but if the performance is as advertised, the Mi Pad is still a very compelling tablet to get, at a very affordable price. Good luck looking for good custom ROMs though.

The fire sale starts at 12pm tomorrow, February 10th. Get your passwords ready, and credit card debts cleared, for the stocks will usually be sold out in just minutes. Visit http://www.mi.com/my/events/mipad/ or http://www.mi.com/my/mipad/ for more information.
