Valve’s Steam Summer Picnic Sale for 2016 is here, and it will run from June 23th for 11 days, until July 4th, 2016, at 10 A.M. Pacific Time in the U.S. (unless otherwise specified). That means in Malaysia, the sale starts around June 24th, and will end on July 5th at 1 A.M., just in time for Raya. The exact date of this sale was first leaked by a Russian game developer (judging by the screenshot that’s in Cyrillic) and has proven to be accurate.
It is said that there are more than 12,000 games, software, and even videos that are on sale; 12,702 titles to be exact (as of June 24th). Singling out games alone, you can expect discounts on popular franchises, franchise bundles, and even VR games and experiences.
Discounts range from 33% to 75%. Sometimes it could go up to 80%, but not this time around I suppose. The rule of thumb is newer titles will have a smaller discount, while older ones will get a larger price cut, but that still depends on the publisher (looking at you, Activision).
For better or worse, this year’s Steam Summer Picnic Sale will not have the usual Daily Deals or Flash Sales. These flash sales and deals will encourage gamers to visit Steam every day in hopes that the games they’ve saved on their wishlists will one day get the 75% discount treatment. But the positive side effect of not having flash sales is that you can now pull the trigger on a game that has a nice discount, knowing full well that it won’t be discounted any further later.
Purchasing games during this period will earn you Summer Picnic Sale trading cards. You’ll get a trading card for every US$10 spent; that’s around RM40. For instance, I’ve spent RM184.55 for seven games, so I’ve received four Summer Picnic Sale trading cards, which frankly, I don’t know what to do with.
Update (June 25th, 2016): Besides franchise bundles, where you can complete your ownership of a particular game franchise, during this summer sale, Steam is also offering genre bundles. One in particular is called ‘The First-Person Puzzle Bundle’, and it comes with games from different developers, including Portal 2, SUPERHOT, and The Talos Principle.
