For those who are tired with Android Wear and Apple Watch, there are slightly more basic smartwatches out there like the honor Band Z1, and for what it’s worth (RM259), it could do quite a bit and meet a lot of people’s requirements, like its small size, steps and sleep tracking, and the ability to receive third-party app notifications. On May 11th, 2016, honor Malaysia released another variant called honor Band SS which is essentially a Z1 but with prettier, more premium “genuine Italian leather” double-loop straps. honor Band SS is in stock now for RM399 over at Vmall.my.
While the honor Band Z1 comes in a silver case with khaki or white straps, and a black case with black straps, honor Band SS only has one color option — a brass/gold-color case with the brown leather straps mentioned earlier. However, Band SS does have two strap length options — a double-loop 395 mm or 365 mm straps.
It is quite a smart move by honor, depending on who you ask. Remember that the straps for the honor Band Z1 (and I’m sure the same is true for honor Band SS too) are not user-removable. So you can’t just buy a Band Z1 and replace it with your own knock-off Hermès straps. Also, besides the color options and the material of the straps, every other specifications are identical between the SS and the Z1. That means you’ll be paying RM140 more for the Band SS just for the leather straps.
All that being said, the honor Band SS (or the Z1 of course), is a pretty decent smartwatch, if you can look past its lack of an optical heart rate sensor. Band SS is a steps counter, a sleep tracker, an app notifications relay, and now with the Italian leather double-loop straps, a fashion statement too.
The case is 38 mm by 9.5 mm, and the 1.06-inch PMOLED has a 128 x 128 resolution. It runs on a Cortex M4 STM32F411 processor and the 70 mAh battery is said to be able to power it for three to four days of use. To charge, just slap on the proprietary magnetic dock which, by the way, doesn’t use inductive charging, but instead, the power is delivered through four Pogo pins at the bottom of the watch case.
