11street Malaysia, that boasts over 5 million products at its “e-mall”, announced its collaboration with Central Market recently on March 28th, 2016. Central Market is one of Kuala Lumpur’s oldest centers and definitely most famous, for Malaysian culture and handicraft products. Through this collaboration, folks around the country (not just those living around Klang Valley) can now browse through and purchase a wide variety of products from Central Market’s diverse mix of retailers. Products range from electronics, fashion, home & living, sports & leisure, and even groceries (Kacip Fatimah, anyone?).
It is not an exaggeration when we said that Central Market is old, considering its construction began on 1888, though it was only completed in 1937. It currently hosts a total of over 300 tenants and has, rightly so, become a landmark for souvenir shopping. This partnership effectively makes products from Central Market retailers who are participating, accessible to us who’d prefer to purchase things online. But of course, the best way to sample some of the finest Central Market products is still, to be there in person.
Clearly, this partnership benefits Central Market as well as its tenants. One of the participating tenants is Gadis Manis Malaysia, a brand that sells bags, T-shirts, tableware, stationery, and even aromatic oils, that are inspired by and promote Malaysia’s architecture, cultures, and nature.
Gadis Manis founder Florence Lambert Lee said, “I founded Gadis Manis in 2008 after moving to Malaysia and falling in love with the culture diversity. I’m confident that partnering with 11street will add a new dimension to the business. I look forward to introducing my unique creations to a hugely-expanded online customer base.”
Another tenant now selling on 11street is Wau Tradisi, a traditional handicraft shop that specializes in homemade Wau, congkak, gasing, wayang kulit, and more. If you’re unfamiliar, Wau is a kite, congkak is a “count-and-capture” game, gasing is a spinning top, and wayang kulit is shadow puppets.
Founder of Wau Tradisi Sarimah added, “E-commerce is universal nowadays; I’m glad that both Central Market and 11street make the effort to promote Malaysian culture by having our traditional items sold at 11street. With the combination between traditional products and modern online marketplace, I believe we can continue to carry on and bring our culture to more people, and even the future generation.”
Gadis Manis and Wau Tradisi are just two of the examples; other participating tenants include the Coconut Shop, that offers products crafted from coconuts, and Borneo Pearl, which sells hand-assembled jewellery pieces with pearls cultured in Sabah.
Besides providing these tenants a platform to expand their reach, 11street also offers education and training programs that cover product listing, digital content strategy, integrated online marketing, and photography.
To celebrate the launch, 11street will be offering a series of Central Market’s promotional discounts and offers of up to 40% all year long until February 24th, 2017.
