Mozilla has announced a new version of Firefox that has been reimagined based on how the web is used today. The update brings new features, elegant design, improved menu and customisation mode. Firefox 29 (which was released yesterday, 29th of April) brings a lot of design tweaks that Mozilla has been working in the background, through their alpha and beta channels, for a long time.
Upon launching the browser, the newly designed tabs will catch your attention (though I should point out that they were designed to fade into the background when not in use). It’s much easier now to see which tab is currently active as the ones in the background will become less distractive.
The Firefox Menu is now at the right corner of the toolbar and you can find all your browser controls in this one single place. The Customise tool has also been moved there and the tool now allows you to easily move any features, services or add-ons, to and from the browser toolbar. Mozilla says that this level of customisation is not found on any other browsers. Also improved is the bookmarks button on the toolbar. It’s much easier to add, manage or view your saved bookmarks now.
The new version also brings a much improved Firefox Sync which, in my opinion, is a pain to set up on multiple devices but a blessing to use once it’s properly set up. It backs up and you can choose to sync the Awesome Bar browsing history, saved passwords, bookmarks, open tabs and forms data across computers and mobile Android devices.
Here are some of the features that have been updated:
- Elegant New Design: New tabs and a modern look.
- Improved Customisation Mode: Much easier to personalise the browser to your requirements.
- Centralised Firefox Menu: Contains all browser controls, features and add-ons in one place.
- Simple Bookmarks: Easier to add and manage bookmarks.
- Easy Access to Add-on Manager: Access and manage add-ons from the Firefox Menu.
- Enhanced Firefox Sync: Just use the Firefox Account to sync and backup your data from Awesome Bar, used passwords, bookmarks, open tabs and web forms.
Apart from new updates and features for end users, the latest version also adds features to the web platform and tools for developers:
- WebRTC
- WebAPIs
- asm.js and Emsripten
- Web Audio API
- CSS Flexbox
- App Manager
- Extension APIs
The new updates and features are also available on Firefox Browser for Android. Download both and try them yourself.
